Centennial

In 2025, the Society of Woman Geographers (SWG) marked a century of exploration and discovery with a centennial celebration in Washington, DC (October 9–13).

The event featured four distinguished plenary speakers: Dr. Arlene Blum (mountaineering), Dr. Ulyana Horodysky (polar science), Sunniva Sorby (polar history and advocacy), and Gaelin Rosenwaks (marine art).

The Society also honored three trailblazing members for their lifelong contributions:

Lynn Funkhouser (Gold Medal): For over five decades of pioneering underwater photography and ocean advocacy.
Carolyn Merchant (Outstanding Achievement Award): For her influential scholarship in environmental philosophy and ecofeminism.
Iris Priestaf (Outstanding Achievement Award): For her impactful work in groundwater science for the benefit of humanity.

The full Centennial Program is available below, with session recordings coming soon.
