Programs
The Society of Woman Geographers (SWG) maintains a robust suite of programs designed to empower woman-identifying researchers, explorers, and scientists through mentorship, networking, and high-level recognition.
Central to its mission is the Flag Carrying Program, established in 1931, which allows members to carry the official SWG flag on significant expeditions ranging from deep-sea dives to outer space missions. For networking opportunities, the SWG hosts triennial conferences, lectures, and community outreach through local groups to foster multidisciplinary intellectual exchange. The next triennial will be in 2028.
Presentations by members serve as a primary platform for sharing high-level research and field expereince across a wide range of disciplines, from climate change and sustainability to medical geography and anthropology.
The organization also preserves the legacy of its members—who have included icons like Amelia Earhart and Jane Goodall—through an oral history program and a museum and library at its Washington, D.C. headquarters.
